Original Action Alert:

Send an Email in Support of Ending Unilateral, Inappropriate Monument Designations

There has been a lot of action already this session on ending the President’s unilateral authority to designate National Monuments. Now the House Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation is giving you yet another opportunity to weigh in!

Representative Nunes (D-CA) has once again introduced legislation to put an end to massive, inappropriate and unilaterally designated National Monuments. H.R. 2192 would require monument designations be confined to the smallest area practicable, require the President to allow 30 days for the Congress, Governor of the affected state and specified local and tribal officials to review a proposed designation, and require at least one public hearing. A year after the monument is proclaimed, the President would have to present Congress with several analyses of the monument, including its economic and energy-independence impact. Finally, unless the designation is approved by Congress, it expires after two years.

The House Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation will be holding a hearing on this important bill on Thursday, June 6.
