Senate Committee Approves Measure that Would Limit Access – Email Feinstein to Ask her to Oppose

As part of the defense reauthorization process the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee recently approved legislation that would withdraw Bureau of Land Management lands in and around the Johnson Valley OHV area and make it available to the Marine Corps for training purposes.  The legislation would essentially rubber stamp the Marines’ proposal and effectively eliminate OHV access to the important riding areas. 

Previously, legislation (H.R. 1960), which passed the full House on June 14, included provisions authored by Representative Paul Cook to create the Johnson Valley National Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area and keep the land in the hands of the BLM.  Under the Cook provisions, Marine training could still take place at specific times, but only with the agreement of BLM and only
at times that would not interfere with off-highway vehicle events in the area.  Now these two differing versions must be reconciled by a Conference Committee.
